A water backup system stores water while supply is available and delivers it to the property when supply is interrupted. The four building blocks are storage, pumping, pressure control and changeover.
1. Storage
Tanks hold the buffer. They are filled from the municipal connection, a borehole, harvested rainwater or a combination. Storage volume is the single biggest design decision, because it determines how long the property can operate without incoming supply.
2. Pumping
Water in a ground-level tank has no useful pressure. A booster pump moves stored water into the property's plumbing at a flow and pressure comparable to normal supply. Pump duty is chosen from the number of outlets likely to run at once, not from tank size.
3. Pressure control
A pressure vessel and controller smooth out demand so the pump is not starting and stopping every time a tap opens. This keeps pressure stable and extends pump life.
4. Changeover
Changeover decides when the property draws from the tank instead of the mains. A manual arrangement requires someone to switch it. An automatic changeover detects the loss of supply and switches over without intervention — useful if interruptions happen while nobody is home.
Sizing it honestly
- List what must keep working during an outage — often bathrooms and kitchen, sometimes not irrigation
- Estimate the daily volume those uses need
- Decide the duration you want to cover
- Multiply the two for a realistic minimum storage volume
- Check that there is a suitable, load-bearing place for tanks of that size
Two things people forget
Pumps need electricity, so if you also want continuity during a power outage that has to be designed in. And stored water needs to move: a system where stored water is used and refilled through normal operation keeps that water in better condition than one that stands untouched for months.
